Rear-End Accidents
Even at moderate speeds, the impact of a rear-end accident can cause significant injuries. These include whiplash and neck injuries, back injuries, arm and wrist injuries, broken bones, facial lacerations and head injuries.
A rear-end crash is most often the fault of the driver in the rear vehicle. The driver may have been texting, talking on the phone, following too closely or simply not paying attention to the road. Or the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is the duty of all drivers to operate their vehicles in a manner that does not injure others. When drivers are unable to stop in time to prevent a crash, they must pay for their negligence.
In Harris County, rear-end accidents kill about 40 people per year, on average, according to the federal government’s Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool (FIRST). Here are some fatal rear-end crash hotspots in the Greater Houston Area:
- I-45 Gulf Freeway at El Dorado Boulevard by Bay Brook Mall, Friendswood, TX
- I-45 at Sam Houston Tollway in Greater Greenspoint, Houston, TX
- Bingle Rd at US 290, Houston, TX
Head-On Collisions
Head-on collision car accidents occur when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide with each other, resulting in a direct impact between the fronts of the vehicles. These accidents are considered one of the most dangerous types of car accidents, as they often occur at high speeds and can result in severe injuries and fatalities.
The types of injuries caused by head-on collisions can include traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, internal organ damage, broken bones, and lacerations, among others. In addition, head-on collisions are more likely to result in fatalities than other types of accidents due to the severity of the impact.
Common reasons why head-on collisions happen include distracted driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, reckless driving, fatigue, and poor visibility. Negligent drivers involved in head-on collisions can include drivers who are speeding, driving the wrong way, swerving across lanes, or failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
In Harris County, head-on collisions kill about 20 people in an average year. Head-on crash hotspots include these and other areas in Harris County:
- Westpark Dr at Hillcroft Ave, S Voss Rd, and I-69, Houston, TX
- Tomball Pkwy (SH-249) at Antoine Dr, Hollister Dr, and Fallbrook Dr, and Sam Houston Pkwy, Houston, TX
- East Fwy (I-10) at Main St and Garth Rd, Baytown, TX
T-Bone Accidents
Intersections are common sites of car accidents – especially T-bone crashes. T-bone car accidents occur when the front of one vehicle collides with the side of another vehicle, creating a “T” shape. These accidents are also known as broadside or side-impact collisions and are often caused by drivers who fail to yield at intersections, run red lights or stop signs, or make illegal turns. T-bone car accidents can be extremely dangerous, as the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front and back.
The types of injuries caused by T-bone car accidents can include traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, internal organ damage, broken bones, and lacerations, among others. In some cases, victims may suffer from whiplash, which is a neck injury caused by a sudden back-and-forth movement of the head.
Negligent drivers involved in T-bone car accidents can include drivers who are distracted, impaired by drugs or alcohol, or driving aggressively. Victims of T-bone car accidents should seek legal assistance to help them understand their legal options and seek compensation for their injuries and damages.
In Harris County, T-bone or “angle” car accidents kill about 75 people every year on average. FIRST does not provide crash data for “T-bone” accidents specifically. However, it does have data on angle crashes, a category that includes T-bones among other types of side-impact collisions. Fatal angle crash hotspots in the Greater Houston Area include:
- Southwest Fwy (US-59) at Beechnut St, Bellaire Blvd, Westpark Dr, and Fondren Rd by Arena Theater, PlazAmericas, and Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, Houston, TX
- Westfield Rd (FM-10) at I-69, Greens Rd, and Sam Houston Pkwy by George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, TX
- Westheimer Rd (FM-10093) at Ashford Dr, Eldridge Pkwy, and Synott Rd by The Commons at the Parkway, Houston, TX
